Compulsive Eating Disorders result when eating too much becomes a habit.

It is also a term to describe a group of illnesses where a person has a distorted view of body image and extreme disturbances in eating behavior.

However, occasionally, we all partake in excessive eating.

For sufferers of this eating disorder, there is little self control when it comes to food and overeating takes place often, even when they lack actual feelings of hunger.

Compulsive Eating Disorders cause the individual to "eat their feelings”.

Similar to food addiction, food is used to comfort oneself, fill voids and hide emotions and even to simply pass the time when boredom occurs.

Unlike most eating disorders, men are common sufferers of this disorder.

Although it is said to be one of the most tell tale eating disorders, with its sufferers often being obese or overweight and typically aware that their eating habits are abnormal.

Here are some signs to help you make a deeper evaluation:

  • You think about eating and look for things to eat even though your body isn’t giving off signals of hunger
  • You eat more food and more rapidly when you are depressed or upset
  • You consume large amounts of food in short periods of time
  • You feel sick to your stomach after eating to the point of "stuffing” yourself
  • You associate eating with inactive activities such as television watching
  • You experience feelings of shame and guilt after eating
  • You are self conscious about your weight but often hide behind it
  • You find it difficult to stop eating while doing so
  • You prefer eating alone
  • You try slimming pills and popular diets but give up or gain the weight back
  • You hide food to eat at a later time.
  • You feel as though food is your only friend.
  • You lack the energy to participate in light activities
  • You have lost interest in sexual activities

Compulsive Eating Disorders are not uncommon.

If after reading the signs you see a bit of yourself in them, you may want to visit your doctor for a physical.

He or she will be able to determine any damages to your health as a result of your eating.

Damages of Compulsive Eating Disorder

The same as any bad health habits, this Eating Disorder will affect you and your well being in multiple ways:


  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Leg and joint pain due to Edema (swelling of the soft tissues as a result of excess water accumulation)
  • Distorted self image
  • Insomnia
  • Death

A common misconception of this disorder sufferers is that they can fix themselves.

On the contrary, they cannot cure their eating disorder alone.

Here are some steps towards finding the right help to overcome your compulsive eating:

  • Find and join a local Over eaters Anonymous
  • Ask your loved ones for their help and support
  • Find other ways to occupy your mind and time
  • Seek nutritional counseling to determine the best healthy eating plans for you
  • Seek psychotherapy to discover why you developed these behaviors and eating patterns

Through determination and professional help, you can beat this Eating Disorder and get on your way to a healthy lifestyle.
